Sensational Meditation for Children Study Group

Start a peer run study group based on Sarah Wood's book Sensational Meditation for Children and receive copies of this book for only $10.

A Sensational Meditation for Children study group is a wonderful way for you to build and enjoy a community of like minded individuals who share your interest in teaching meditation to children.

In addition to the book discount you will receive Study Group Leader materials for free, including meeting outlines and promotional materials. No prior experience with meditation, children or leading groups is necessary. Just an interest in the subject.

Specifics about the Study Group

The study group is made up of 14 meetings – if offered weekly, the group will last about three months. The meetings can last between 1.5 and 2 hours. Books will be available for $10 if three or more are ordered and shipped to one address. In addition, in 2007, the author Sarah Wood will host a conference call for all members – free of charge. You do not need a minimum number of members to begin your group, however ten or less is recommended. You can start your group any time.

Group leaders will receive a folder with the following materials:

1. Ten Member Welcome letters, one for each member of your group.

2.
A meeting outline for each of the 14 meetings (see sample bellow).

3.
A list of meeting “procedures”, for lack of a better term, including information about publicity, members joining late, your role, what to expect in a typical meeting, facilitating exercises, book reading and discussions, and more. Although this information is quite specific, it can be followed to any degree you are comfortable with. It is written to make things easier on you if you find it helpful. The only aspect that our organization feels strongly about is the “Taking Money” point. With the exception of rental costs, we do not support Study Group Leaders who collect money for their time. It is our intention that this be a peer-run group. One more exception - Group Leaders who have completed Child Meditation Facilitators Training have permission to use the Study Group syllabus to develop and teach a Sensational Meditation for Children class for a course fee, if they choose to do so.

4. Four flyers ready for you to post to promote your group. Just fill in the correct meeting dates and contact information.

At this time these materials are offered at no charge.

Sample Meeting Outline:

Week 4:

Invite each member to say hello and express how they are and/or any work they have done since their last meeting using the techniques in the book Sensational Meditation for Children.

Read pages 25 – 34 in Sensational Meditation for Children.

Do Exercise 2: A Full Sensational Experience on page 32.

Ask each member to share about their experience doing Exercise 2 (including you).

Facilitate the following discussion questions:

What do you think children hear, see, feel and possibly smell and taste with their outer senses while they meditate?

What do you think children hear, see, feel and possibly smell and taste with their inner senses while they meditate?

After experiencing the meditations today and in previous meetings, what sensory channels do you prefer to use (sight, hearing, feeling – inner or outer)? What sensory channels do you hope to improve in future meditations?

These three questions can take up a lot of time in a group discussion. However, feel free to add more.

How to order your books:

To receive the discount price of $10 per book, three or more books need to be ordered at once and shipped to the same address. When ordering your books at a discount, please email us the following information: (a) number of books (b) email address of each person receiving a book (c) address to ship books to. Then we will email you back with the total cost including shipping. You can either choose to pay online with paypal or send a check.

You might need to do some publicity before placing your first book order. Here some helpful hints:

Post flyers on community bulletin boards in coffee shops, yoga studios, bookstores, grocery stores and anywhere you feel is a suitable place. You can also find local internet sites and publications that will post information about your study group. Word of mouth will probably be your best tool for promoting your group. Tell and email as many people as you can about your group. Targeting specific organizations is also helpful. Keep in mind the following will be your target audience – parents, childcare workers, teachers, therapists, social workers, healers, meditators, and yoga teachers/students. Email us for a sample flyer.
